    Summary

    The Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation's grantmaking strategy focuses on three key areas: education, research, and implementation. Specifically, they seek to:

    • Cultivate a new generation of nurse innovators;
    • Equip young nurse researchers with the broad, interdisciplinary skill sets necessary to lead change in health care;
    • Support innovations with a high potential for patient impact;
    • Encourage the rapid development of promising research;
    • Promote the translation of tested innovations into policy and practice; and
    • Ensure that significant innovations reach the greatest number of patients.

    The current programs funded by the foundation are:

    • Hillman Innovations in Care Program: These awards will explicitly target innovations that provide care to vulnerable populations, a category that includes the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, and other groups that encounter barriers to accessing quality healthcare services.
    • Hillman Emergent Innovation Program: The Hillman Emergent Innovation Program (HEI) seeks bold, early-stage (pre-evidence or untested) innovations that target health and health care problems for vulnerable populations including the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people, the homeless, rural populations, and others.
    • Hillman Emergent Innovation: Serious Illness and End of Life Program: The Hillman Serious Illness and End of Life Emergent Innovation Program (HSEI) seeks bold, early stage, or untested interventions that address health challenges faced by vulnerable populations including the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ people, people experiencing homelessness, rural populations, and others.
    • Hillman Innovation Dissemination Program: The Hillman Innovation Dissemination Program (HID) aims to expand and enhance the scaling efforts of established nursing-driven interventions that target the needs of vulnerable populations.
