Support of Advanced Fossil Resource Utilization Research by Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Institutions (HBCU/OMI) supports the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) mission by supporting long-term, high-risk meritorious fundamental research that advances the science of coal technologies at eligible U.S. colleges and universities. Work conducted in this program enables segments of the college population, not typically tapped for educational research in these subject areas, to advance technical skills and provide a meaningful contribution to DOE’s Crosscutting Research program. Thus, grants awarded under this program are intended to maintain and upgrade educational, training, and research capabilities of HBCUs/OMIs in the fields of science and technology related to fossil energy resources.
The program was designed to raise the overall level of competitiveness of HBCUs/OMIs with other institutions in the field of fossil energy research; and to tap an under-utilized resource by increasing the number of opportunities in the areas of science, engineering, and technical management.
