    Summary

    The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Division of Public and Intermodal Transportation is empowered to make grants to municipalities, districts, and carriers for the acquisition, construction, extension, reconstruction an improvement of mass transportation facilities. IDOT provides funds to local transit providers for a variety of capital projects including land acquisition, design, facility construction, and the purchase of rolling stock, ITS software and hardware and office and maintenance equipment.

    Capital grants are made for projects that retain, upgrade, or expand present facilities or new service.  These include acquisition, construction, reconstruction, or capital improvement of any bus, rapid transit, or railroad facility.  Funds will not be provided for planning, fare subsidies, operating expenses, maintenance and service, administration of the project or any other costs not capital in nature.

    Eligible applicants are those authorized to provide mass transportation in the State of Illinois, including mass transit districts, regional transportation authorities, carriers, metropolitan planning organizations, and local governmental authorities.
