Summary
Save America's Treasures grants from the Historic Preservation Fund provide preservation and/or conservation assistance to nationally significant historic properties and collections. The grants are administered by the National Park Service (NPS) in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Grants are available to fund two types of projects: "Collections" and "Preservation". Collections include artifacts, museum collections, documents, sculptures, and other works of art. Preservation projects fund planning and "bricks and mortar" preservation/conservation work on historic buildings and structures. Historic properties eligible for Preservation projects include historic districts, buildings, sites, structures, and objects.
This program supports the following Department of the Interior (DOI) priorities:
- Modernizing our infrastructure: Remove impediments to infrastructure development and facilitate private sector efforts to construct infrastructure projects serving American needs;
- Restoring trust with local communities: Expand the lines of communication with Governors, state natural resource offices, Fish and Wildlife offices, water authorities, county commissioners, Tribes, and local communities.
Applications are evaluated using the following criteria.
- National Significance - the historic collection or property must be nationally significant.
- Severity of Threat to the Historic Property or Collection - the collection or historic property must be threatened or endangered, and the application must document the urgent preservation and/or conservation need.
- How Effectively the Project Mitigates the Threat - projects must substantially mitigate the threat and must have a clear public benefit (for example, historic places open for visitation or collections available for public viewing or scholarly research).
- Project Feasibility - the project must be feasible (i.e. able to be completed within the proposed activities, schedule, and budget described in the application), and the application must document adequately the required non-Federal match.
- DOI Priorities- projects must meet at least one of the DOI priorities listed above.

History of Funding
For FY2022, a total of $25,000,000 for projects was available under this program.
Since 1999, there have been almost 4,000 requests for funding totaling $1.54 billion. In response to these requests, $340,000,000 was awarded to more than 1,300 recipients. Previously funded projects can be seen at http://www.archfoundation.org/2017/09/treasure-map/.
Additional Information
Eligible properties must be either currently: 1) individually listed as a National Historic Landmark or be a contributing property within a National Historic Landmark district, or 2) individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places for national significance (properties listed at the state or local significance are not eligible) or be a contributing property within a nationally significant National Register Historic District. Properties include buildings, sites, structures and objects.
Eligible collections must be determined to be of national significance based on the supportive description of its significance within the application. Collections include artifacts, documents, sculptures and other works of art.
Funding is not provided for the following:
- Acquisition (i.e. purchase in fee simple or interest) of collections or historic properties;
- Survey or inventory of historic properties or cataloging of collections;
- Long-term maintenance or curatorial work beyond the grant period;
- Interpretive or training programs;
- Reconstruction of historic properties;
- Moving historic properties or work on historic properties that have been moved;
- Construction of new buildings;
- Historic structure reports and collection condition assessments, unless they are one component of a larger project to implement the results of these studies by performing work recommended by the studies;
- Cash reserves, endowments or revolving funds;
- Costs of fund-raising campaigns;
- Costs of work performed prior to grant award; and
- Federal agency grantees – Federal salaries, agency overhead, or administrative costs.
Eligibility Details
Eligible applicants are:
- Nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3), U.S organizations;
- Units of state or local government;
- Federally-recognized Indian Tribes, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiian Organizations;
- Educational institutions
- Public and State controlled Higher educational institutions; and
- Federal agencies funded by the Department of the Interior and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, with the exception of the National Park Service (NPS).
- Grants will not be available for work on sites or collections owned by the NPS
- Other federal agencies collaborating with a nonproft partner to preserve the historic properties or collections owned by the federal agency may submit applications through the nonproft partner

Deadline Details
Applications are to be submitted by December 19, 2023. A similar deadline is anticipated, annually.
Award Details
For FY2023, a total of $26,500,000 for projects is available under this program. Preservation projects must range from $125,000 to $750,000 in federal share, of which no more than 20% of the total budget may go toward pre-preservation costs such as architectural or engineering services. Collection projects must range from $25,000 to $750,000. Historic Property Projects range from minimum of $125,000 and maximum $750,000 Federal share. A 50% match (1:1) is required for both project types.
