Summary
The NCDPI School Safety Grants Program works to improve safety in public school units by providing grants for school resource officers, services for students in crisis, school safety training, safety equipment in schools, and additional school mental health support personnel.
Applicants may request funding under the following program areas:
- School Resource Officers
- School Equipment
- Services for Students in Crisis. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Crisis respite services for parents or guardians of an individual student to prevent more intensive or costly levels of care;
- Training and expanded services for therapeutic foster care families and licensed child placement agencies that provide services to students who need support to manage their health, welfare, and safety and have cognitive or behavioral problems, developmental delays, and/or aggressive behavior;
- Evidence-based therapy services aligned with targeted training for students and their parents or guardians, including parent-child therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, or child-parent psychotherapy; or
- Any other evidence-based crisis service likely to increase school safety.
- Training to Increase School Safety. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) training for school mental health support personnel, local first responders, and teachers on the topics of suicide prevention and reducing access by students to lethal means;
- Training for school mental health support personnel on comprehensive and evidence-based clinical treatments for students and their parents or guardians, including parent-child interaction therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, or child-parent psychotherapy;
- Training for students and school employees on community resilience models to improve and understand responses to trauma and significant stress;
- Training for mental health support personnel on Modular Approach to Therapy for Children with Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, or Conduct Problems (MATCH-ADTC), including any of the following components: trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, parent and student coping skills, problem solving, or safety planning; or
- Any other evidence-based training to increase school safety.
Grants provided to public school units shall be used to supplement and not to supplant state or non-State funds already provided for these services.

Up to $30,100,000 total was available in 2020. Of that funding, awards were distributed across the following categories:
- School Resource Officer (SRO) - Up to $15,000,000 was available. Applicants could request up to $33,333 per SRO. Cost sharing/matching of 2:1 was required.
- School Equipment - Up to $6,100,000 is available. Applicants could request up to $5.00 per pupil.
- Services for Students in Crisis - Up to $4,500,000 was available. There is no minimum/maximum award size.
- Training to Increase School Safety - Up to $4,500,000 was available. There is no minimum/maximum award size.

Additional Information
Grant writer fees, indirect costs, costs to attend out-of-state conferences and trainings, and costs associated with entertainment are unallowable under this grant.
Eligibility Details
Eligible applicants are NC public school units. A public-school unit (PSU) is defined as a local school administrative unit, regional school, innovative school, laboratory school, or charter school.
Deadline Details
The last posted application deadline was October 25, 2019. A 2021 deadline was anticipated. An email was sent on 4/27/2022 to the program manager regarding new funding, as well as on 1/30/2024. For deadline and funding information, contact NC DPI at schoolsafetygrants@dpi.nc.gov.
